The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, also known as PHEV. The 4xe system is a seamless combination of a 2.0-Liter turbocharged Inline-4 cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors. One electric motor is mounted at the front of the engine where the traditional alternator would be, while the other is inside the transmission, in place of the torque converter. The electric generators are powered by a rechargeable 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack underneath the rear seat. This combination provides drivers with 49 miles per gallon, 370 miles of total driving range, and 21 miles of all-electric driving range. Furthermore, the Wrangler 4xe provides superior capability with 375 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque that is instantly available. The 4xe powertrain is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and comes standard with Selec-Trac 4x4 with 4-High and 4-Low modes.

There is a common misconception that vehicles lose their capability and performance when they go hybrid, but this could not be further from the truth for the Wrangler 4xe. In fact, Jeep made sure that if the capability were to change by adding electric power, it would be for the better! The Wrangler 4xe is still every bit of the off-roading legend as the traditional gas-powered models, with optimized ground clearance, approach, breakover, and departure angles, tow hooks, and removable tops and doors. Revamping the Wrangler's capability on the trails is the instant torque. This allows off-roaders to pass over rugged terrain like rocks and logs without building up RPMs. It's common knowledge that electricity and water don't mix, which is why all electrical connections are sealed. The battery pack is sealed off as well to prevent water damage so that the Wrangler can take on up to 30 inches of water. The Wrangler Rubicon 4xe takes capability to a whole new level with Rock-Trac 4x4, a full-time transfer case optimized for greater control over rugged terrain. Additionally, the Rubicon adds a disconnecting front sway bar, allowing the front wheels to drop and compress further for greater wheel articulation. The Rubicon also features locking front and rear differentials, which will lock both axles to move all four wheels at the same speed. When the differentials are not locked, up to 100% of torque will be routed to the axle with the most traction.

The lineup of Wrangler 4xe trim levels is very similar to the higher trim levels of the gas-powered Wrangler. The Sahara kicks off the Wrangler 4xe lineup with exterior features like keyless entry/ignition, 20-inch alloy wheels, removable doors, a removable hardtop, a fold-down windshield, and body-color fender flares. Inside, you'll find dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, Android/Apple smartphone integration, and leather-trimmed upholstery. The Rubicon 4xe is the most rugged of the bunch offering the exclusive off-roading features mentioned above as well as FOX suspension system, high-clearance fender flares, and Surf Blue tow hooks and interior accents. The fittingly named High Altitude tops off the lineup with premium features like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, 20-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels, quilted Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery, and much more.
