Continue reading below to learn more about the 4x4 systems offered by the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee!

Quadra-Trac I 4x4

The Grand Cherokee's first 4x4 system, Quadra-Trac I, is a full-time automatic 4x4 system, running in four-wheel drive at all times. Quadra-Trac I uses a single-speed transfer case running in 4-High at all times with a torque split of 52% to the rear axle and 48% to the front axle. This provides excellent traction under normal conditions as well as in snow, loose gravel, and other low-traction conditions. To enhance traction, the Quadra-Trac I system coordinates with a Brake Lock Differential to control wheel speed from side to side instead of powering all four wheels at the same speed all the time. The Brake Lock Differential allows torque to be shifted from wheels that are slipping to the wheels that have traction. This provides drivers with total confidence even when traction becomes limited.

Quadra-Trac II 4x4

Quadra-Trac II comes next, offering even more capability and confidence. This intelligent system replaces the single-speed transfer case with one with two speeds. Depending on the terrain, this allows drivers to choose between 4-High and 4-Low modes. Shifting into 4-Low allows for better traction at lower speeds. This is done by lowering the transfer case gear ratio to provide more torque while driving at low speeds. This is especially useful when driving uphill in snow or crawling over rugged off-road terrain. Like Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II coordinates with a Brake Lock Differential. However, Quadra-Trac II system takes it one step further, using a network of sensors to detect a loss of traction, limiting traction to the wheels that are slipping and sending up to 100% of torque to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra-Drive II 4x4

Quadra-Drive II brings the best quality of both Quadra-Trac systems while also being fine-tuned to provide the best traction to the Grand Cherokee. It uses a two-speed transfer case with 4-High and 4-Low modes for greater versatility. The main difference is that it uses a rear electronic limited-slip differential to detect tire slip at the earliest possible moment and redistribute up to 100% of torque to a single wheel to limit and even eliminate the slip.

Selec-Terrain Traction Management

Selec-Terrain, Jeep's traction management system, comes standard with all 4x4 Grand Cherokee models. Selec-Terrain gives drivers the availability to choose between Auto, Snow, Sport, and Sand/Mud modes. Meanwhile, Rock mode is exclusive to Grand Cherokee models equipped with Quadra-Drive II. The Selec-Terrain system makes adjustments to the torque split, transmission shift points, throttle control, Brake Lock Differential, and electronic stability control systems. Auto mode leaves traction control to the 4x4 system, reading road conditions and making the necessary adjustments to best handle the conditions detected. Meanwhile, Snow mode is optimized for low-traction situations caused by snow, optimizing the torque split and power output to reduce wheel spin. With Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II, Snow mode will automatically shift the transfer case into 4-Low mode. Sport mode raises the transmission shift points, allowing for higher RPMs between shifts to maximize on-road performance. It also offers greater power output for the same effect. Sand/Mud mode operates similarly to Snow mode with slightly different adjustments to best handle loose gravel and deep mud. Lastly, available Rock Mode shifts the Quadra-Drive II transfer case into 4-Low, optimizes the rear limited-slip differential, and lowers the transmission shift points to provide greater traction at low speeds.
