The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe is the first-ever plug-in hybrid option for the iconic SUV. This hybrid powertrain is available for the Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, and Summit Reserve trim levels. Continue reading below to learn more about how the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is powered and what else it has to offer!
What powers the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe?
The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe combines the power of Jeep's 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine with two electric motors powered by a 17-kilowatt hour 400-volt battery pack. The first electric generator is placed in front of the engine, replacing the alternator, while the second is mounted in the transmission, replacing the torque converter. This provides a remarkable 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque! Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee 4xe provides drivers with a combined average of 57 miles per gallon and 25 miles of fully electric driving! To put drivers in control of usage, the 4xe comes with E-Selec drive modes. The PHEV setup is mated to Jeep's legendary Quadra-Trac II 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case.
What is E-Selec?
The E-Selec buttons allow the driver to stay in control of the hybrid system with three drive modes, Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save. Hybrid mode uses a combination of gas and electric power and is the default setting. Hybrid uses gas power while the driver is applying pressure to the accelerator, while the gas engine will disengage when there is zero pressure on the accelerator. Electric mode fully disengages the gas engine for silent, zero-emissions driving. When more torque is requested by pressing the accelerator, the gas engine will engage to supply the additional torque. Lastly, the E-Save mode deactivates the electric motors and operates solely on the gas engine to save the battery.
How is the 4xe battery pack charged?
Being a plug-in hybrid, the Grand Cherokee 4xe is charged by a standard 120-volt Level 1 Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) charger. This charges the 4xe battery in about 12 hours. The Level 2 PHEV charger is available for purchase and cuts the charging time to just two hours! Also, Jeep has started placing 4xe charging stations at the trailheads of all Jeep Badge of Honor trails, allowing drivers to charge up before venturing onto the trails. Beyond being plugged in, the 4xe also charges using a process called brake regeneration. This process charges the battery while the vehicle is slowing down. Additionally, the Max Regeneration feature uses a more assertive regenerative braking calibration when the driver fully lets off the gas pedal. Max Regen will slow the Grand Cherokee faster than regular regenerative braking and supply more electricity to the battery pack.
