Jeep 4xe Lineup Off-Road Capability
Learn more from Village Jeep!
Jeep is most well-known for its all-terrain capabilities. Born on the battlefields of World War II, Jeep never lost its rugged ability to handle some of the toughest terrains on earth. Over the years, Jeep has continued to perfect the art of making off-road vehicles. In the 2022 model year, Jeep is taking capability to new heights with the electrified power of the 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain. Available for the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, the 4xe system provides the fuel efficiency of a hybrid without sacrificing Jeep's legendary all-terrain capability. Continue reading below to learn just how capable the Jeep 4xe lineup can be!
Hybrid Setup of the Jeep 4xe Lineup
As you might assume because it is a hybrid powertrain, the Jeep 4xe models combine gas and electric power. The gas power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine, while the electric power comes from two electric motors powered by a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. One electric motor replaces the traditional alternator in front of the engine, while the second is mounted inside the transmission where the torque converter would normally be. This setup provides seamless Engine Stop/Start (ESS) and instant torque distribution. Both the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler get an incredible 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee offers drivers 25 miles of electric driving, a total driving range of 440 miles, and 56 MPG. The Wrangler's fuel efficiency numbers are a 370-mile total driving range, a 21-mile electric driving range, and 49 MPG.
Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe Four-Wheel Drive Systems
Jeep titled their hybrid system 4xe because it combines the phrases 'four-by-four' and electric, becoming four-by-electric. The Grand Cherokee 4xe comes with Quadra-Trac II 4x4. Quadra-Trac II is a full-time 4x4, meaning it monitors road conditions and continuously reacts by redistributing torque to the axle with the most traction through a two-speed transfer case. The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe comes exclusively equipped with Quadra-Drive II 4x4 with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. This provides unbeatable off-roading traction with the ability to send up to 100% of available torque to a single rear wheel. The Wrangler 4xe models use Selec-Trac 4x4. This is an on-demand system, meaning it senses road conditions and automatically switches from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive without any driver input when a loss of traction occurs. Finally, exclusive to the Rubicon trim is a Rock-Trac 4x4 system with a lower gear ratio in the transfer case to better handle low-speed crawling situations.
Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe
The Rubicon trim is the most capable trim level in the Wrangler lineup and the electric power only enhances that capability. The Rubicon's superior capability begins with the suspension system. Using FOX off-roading shock absorbers and a disconnecting front sway bar, the Rubicon's wheels can rise and fall further, allowing for greater wheel articulation to crawl over rocks, logs, and other trail obstacles you may encounter. Additionally, the Rubicon has 10.8-inches of ground clearance. For enhanced traction, the Rubicon trim comes with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. Lastly, the Rubicon has wide-track locking front and rear axles that offer drivers the ability to keep all four wheels moving at the same speed, maximizing traction.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe
Like the Wrangler Rubicon, the Trailhawk stands out with additional features to enhance off-road capabilities. For instance, the Trailhawk uses a disconnecting front sway bar, allowing greater articulation. Additionally, Quadra-Lift air suspension comes standard, allowing adjustable height settings and up to 11.3 inches of ground clearance. Other exclusive features include high-strength steel skid plates, all-terrain tires, a redesigned anti-glare hood decal, recovery hooks, and an integrated front-facing off-road camera.
