Jeep Wrangler 4xe Revealed
Brought to you by Village Jeep
Jeep has added another weapon to the Wrangler repertoire with the arrival of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The Wrangler 4xe is the most capable and technologically advanced Jeep Wrangler of all time and will be available in the United States in early 2021. So what is the Wrangler 4xe? It's a plug-in hybrid powertrain that is capable of up to 25 miles of silent, zero-emission, and electric-only propulsion. The electric engine is combined with the off-road and open-air experience that only Jeep offers. The power of this electronic engine is derived from a high-tec 2.0-liter turbocharged engine I-4 engine and connects to a Torqueflite eight-speed automatic transmission. It handles the torque efficiently while also improving the fuel economy. There is much more to go over with the new Wrangler 4xe. Continue reading for more.
Wrangler 4xe Powertrain
The Wrangler 4xe combines two electric motors with a 400-volt battery pack with a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine, and the Torquefilte eight-speed automatic transmission. The power output for the Wrangler 4xe is 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque that comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and an engine mounted motor generated unit. This high-tech direct-inject engine uses a twin-scroll and low-inertia turbocharger that is mounted directly to the cylinder head. Also included is a dedicated cooling circuit that works for the turbocharger, which improves the performance and fuel economy. The best part about the Wrangler 4xe is that it doesn't use a 12-volt starter motor. Instead, it comes equipped with a 12-volt battery to run all the accessories.
Battery Pack Improves the Interior
With the Wrangler 4xe comes a 400-volt, 17-kWh, 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack that uses nickel manganese cobalt graphite chemistry. The pack and the controls mount underneath the second-row seat where it is protected from all the outside elements from the road and the weather. This allows the second-row seat to be completely redesigned, allowing the bottom cushion to flip forward so you can access the battery. Also included with the 4xe hybrid system is Dual Charging Module, which combines the battery charger with the DC/DC converter to a single unit, which makes it more compact. All of the high-voltage components, including the wiring between the battery pack and electric motors, are sealed and waterproof. The charge port for the battery includes LED indicators for charging status. An LED battery level monitor is mounted on the top of the instrument panel, which makes it easier to check the state of the battery on the dash.
New Selec Modes
Your Wrangler 4xe is tailored specifically to you for each trip. There are three different modes of operation available, which are known as the E Selec. The driver can choose from any one of these options via buttons mounted on the instrument panel, directly to the left of the steering wheel. These modes include a hybrid mode, which is the default mode, and will use the battery power first then adds in the propulsion from the 2.0-liter turbocharged when the battery reaches a minimum amount of charge. The next mode is known as electric, which allows the powertrain to operate on zero-emission electric power only until the battery reaches a minimum level of charge or the driver needs more torque, then the 2.0-liter engine will be engaged. The last mode is the eSave, which prioritizes the propulsion from the 2.0-liter engine and saving the battery for later use, such as during off-roading. The driver can also select from either a Battery Save or Battery Change via the Hybrid Electric Pages in the Uconnect monitor.Â
