Jeep Wrangler Hardtop and Door Removal
Learn more from Village Jeep!
The Jeep Wrangler is an icon in the automotive industry for a handful of reasons, and one of those reasons is the removable top and doors. Removing the Wrangler's top and doors gives you what Jeep likes to call open-air freedom, that feeling of the wind in your hair and the sun on your skin. That feeling is a driving factor for many Wrangler shoppers and owners. However, removing the top and doors of your Wrangler can often feel like a tedious chore. Here at Village Jeep, we want to make sure you enjoy your Wrangler to the fullest. That's why, here on this page, we're giving you step-by-step instructions to get that open-air freedom from your Wrangler!
Remove the Front Panels
The hard tops that Jeep offers for the Wrangler come with three panels. One in the rear, which is attached to the rear windows, and two over the front of the cabin. The two front panels are secured in place by six latches, three in the front and three in the rear. The first step is to undo these six latches. To undo the two latches on the side of the front of the panel, you will have to move the visors out of the way. Once all six latches are undone, it is a simple lift and remove. Start by removing the driver's side and setting it aside in a safe place, then move to the passenger side.
Remove the Rear Panels
For the rear panel, you will need a T-40 Torx head driver and an extra set of hands. The rear panel is kept in place by a total of eight bolts. These bolts can be removed by the aforementioned T-40 Torx head driver. Start by removing the two bolts on the driver and passenger side of the front of the top. Next, there are three bolts on the inside of the rear windows on both sides, all six of which must be removed. An important note to keep in mind is that if your Wrangler comes with a rear window defroster, you must remove the electrical connection, which can be found just inside the swing gate on the left side when looking at the rear of the vehicle. After the bolts and connections are all loose, you can now have a friend help lift the top from both sides and carefully set it aside.
Remove the Doors
Removing the doors is the next step to your total open-air freedom. No matter if you have a two-door or four-door Wrangler, the process is the same. Start by rolling down the windows, so the door is easier to grab and prevent any glass damage. Next, remove the black safety strap on the inside of the door that prevents it from opening too far. If your Jeep is equipped with power windows and door locks, you'll need to unplug the electrical connection for these features. This wiring harness is under the dashboard on the driver's side. Once this is done, use the Torx head driver to remove both the top and bottom hinge pin screws. Be sure to do this carefully so as not to scratch the paint. Then, you should be able to simply lift the door up and off the hinges. Be sure to be careful when handling the doors and place them in a safe place. This is where rolling the windows down comes in handy, as it allows you to reach in and grab the door handle to lift the door. This process is the same for as many doors as you'd like to remove.
